Hair Transplant is the procedure in which hair follicles are harvested from the donor area mainly back of the scalp and then transplanted to the bald area or the recipient area. The transplanted hair grows in a natural way as the original ones and thus a bald person gets his hair back. If the science of hairline design is followed during the procedure, this will give an absolutely natural look to the person.
First Hair Transplant was performed by a Japanese doctor, Dr. Shoji Okuda(1886-1962) in 1937. Later Dr. Norman Orentrich described the use of hair transplant in male pattern baldness and gave the theory of “Donor dominance”. The hair in the occipital zone are resistant to the effect of DHT and hence are usually persist for a lifetime. Hair roots taken from this zone is considered as permanent. He demonstrated that the new hair grew and remains there as they would have in the donor area.
Previously Hair Transplant was done by using a method known as “ Punch grafting”. 4.0 mm punch grafts were implanted, this gives the doll-like appearance and unnatural look.
